What is Biotin?

"Biotin is one of B-complex vitamins (also known as vitamin H) that plays an important role in metabolism; helping your body process energy and transporting carbon dioxide from the body's cells," says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Susan Stuart.

It is also known as "beauty pills" that claim to increase hair and nail growth and strength. But these claims are untested and are not supported by hard evidence. Perhaps these rich results have some validity: "Biotin is most effective in treating biotin deficiency, which can lead to brittle nails and hair loss," Dr. Susan Stuart. How Much is Too Much Biotin?

Dr. Stuart suggests looking for these possible signs of biotin overdose: slower insulin release, skin rash, lower vitamin C and B6 levels, and high blood sugar levels (most of the indicated signs can only be diagnosed by blood medical testing). Many users of biotin have reported cystic acne and hair loss (in some cases).

The daily recommended dose of biotin is 2.5 mg according to Dr. Richard Scher and the adequate intake (AI) is 30 micrograms for adults over 18 years of age. Many daily multivitamins offer the daily recommended dose of biotin in addition to other important vitamins and minerals that also support healthy hair and skin without side effects. In this amount it is safe, but as a precaution, it is always advantageous to consult a physician before starting any vitamin regimen.

Many biotin pills contain doses that are 100x more than the recommended daily dose. You can buy biotin pills that are 5000 mcg or 1000 mcg.

In most cases, the average person does not need so much, nor is it recommended. Because of these high doses, it is important to consult your doctor before taking biotin – or any supplement for that part, except for a daily multivitamin.

Biotin side effects

The drastic increase in biotin can be blamed for the negative side effects such as cystic acne.
