Building the essential wardrobe: tips and tricks

If you are planning to create your important male wardrobe, there are a number of steps to take to make sure you get all the elements you need to create a fully balanced selection of clothing to suit every occasion.

The first thing to do is to start with the clothes you already have in the closet so go through and remove everything you haven't used for two years or more and put it in the pile for the charity shop. You have to be ruthless.

After completing this first important step, you can move on to the rest of our tips and tricks to build the elements you need to create the perfect wardrobe for you, which means you'll never run out of things to wear again.

1. Decide which image you want to display

It is important to understand what image you want to portray and what type of style you are aiming for. For example, do you think of trendy, formal, business clothes, sportswear or a combination of them? Do you want a very formal wardrobe for work and a very relaxed for your free days? Do you need special costumes for evening outings with strict dress codes? Note all the looks you know you will need to achieve as part of your everyday life.

2. Make sure you have the staples

As a professional working man, there are some clear basics that should be in your wardrobe. For this, we asked for help from our friends from Dobell – a site for men's dress shirts and suits; and they gave us their list to supplement your new wardrobe:

  • Six business suits
  • Two pairs of casual shoes
  • Matching belts to wear with your shoes
  • Two white dress shirts
  • Ten regular shirts in mixed colors and designs
  • Ten bands in mixed colors and patterns
  • Four pairs of smart jeans
  • Four pairs of smart pants in different colors
  • Four smart t-shirts
  • Two polo shirts
  • Five thin jumps in mixed colors
  • A sports jacket
  • A navy blue blazer
  • Six compartments in different colors

3. Elements needed for very formal occasions

Each one should have a formal casual suit to wear for the special invitations that may come your way so make sure to invest in these elements so that you know that you can always step up to any suitable occasion that may arise.

  • A pair of dress shoes (black lace)
  • A clock
  • A quality tuxedo suit
  • A costume brush
  • A dress shirt
  • cuff
  • Bow tie or black tie

4. Other casual things

Not every occasion requires formal wear so here are several other more casual items that each man's wardrobe must be complete:

  • A simple guard every day
  • A smart overcoat
  • Several gloves
  • A hat and scarf
  • Warmer jumpers
  • Vests
  • Stockings and boxers

5. Plan your budget

It is important to plan your budget carefully as if you were to buy all of the above items at once, it would get thousands, so plan your money and the best way is to build up your purchases one at a time, so choose a business suit that can is worn regularly as a starting item and then added to the wardrobe with a number of costume options.

6. Always choose quality over cost

When you buy a brand new wardrobe, it can be tempting to cut costs by buying cheaper, low quality items, but quality clothing is an investment and will last much longer and will wash well, so it's always better to invest in several high quality objects other than cutting corners.

Quality items will also be more likely to fit you better and create a much better look and feel overall than cheap items which, no matter how much you jazz them up, will always stand out for all the wrong reasons when you wear them.

Building the essential wardrobe should be done gradually over years, rather than all at once, but if you want to renew your style and update your clothing collection start by deciding what type of style you want and take it from there.

You can use men's magazines or movies for inspiration for different looks and styles and then create a list of articles that you miss using the checklist in our guide, shown above. Once you know what style you want and what things you need, you can start working on building your wardrobe piece by piece.

From casual jeans and t-shirts to formal business suits and a tuxedo, if you follow this guide you will have everything you need to make sure you are appropriately dressed for any occasion that may come up on your calendar.
