Taking care of your skin at night is so important– this is the time when your skin heals and repairs itself, so it is important that you provide nourishment and moisture to help it recover. I always change the products I use – it's literally my job to test skin care – so I wanted to share my updated routine with you.
Step 1: You have to double clean every night, that is literally the most important thing you can do. If you do not clean twice, you will not get deep into your pores or remove all your makeup or dirt that has accumulated during the day.
I always start with a conditioner or oil makeup remover, which melts away makeup and SPF. I use our super-mild but very powerful Huda Beauty Makeup Remover Balm, $ 15. After washing, I use a water-based makeup remover, like a foam or facial wash of gel, to clean deep in the pores. The first step essentially removes makeup, while the second cleaning can actually penetrate the pores and process its magic. Right now, I love the slightly exfoliating laundry from Tatcha, The Deep Cleanse Exfoliating Cleanser, $ 38. It is super refreshing and helps to clean and detox the pores with amino acids and exfoliating fruit extract, while Japanese wild rose helps tighten the pores and supple skin structure.
Sometimes I like to use cleaning brushes or devices like Foreo with my last cleaning step, and I also love to use a muslin cloth in my routine to remove cleaning oils or masks.
Step 2: When I have cleaned twice, I always use toner. This helps you get rid of all the last traces of makeup that may have been missed around the hairline and also helps to balance and prepare your skin for the next skin care step. I've been a longtime fan of Clinique Clarifying Lotion 2, $ 17, which has witch hazel and hydrating sodium hyaluronate (hyaluronic acid). These are powerful things and I feel that it really helps to keep my skin clear – I have used it for years!
Step 3: The next thing I use is the 111SKIN Antioxidant Energizing Essence, $ 100, which has this really silky formula that blends into the skin. I honestly feel that essences are such a skincare game changer and this is one of my fave formulas. Learn more about using essences in your routine here.
Step 4: To ensure that my skin is hydrated to the maximum, I use a hyaluronic acid serum to penetrate deeply and plump the skin. Right now I'm obsessed with Dr. Barbara Sturm Hyaluronic Serum, $ 300, which plumps up my skin and the texture feels fantastic. However, it is a huge splurge, and I am also a big fan of Dr. Jart + Peptidine ™ Firming Serum With Energy Peptides, which also has a great plump effect. The Mizon Hyaluronic Acid 100, $ 15, is also a good value option and I really like the texture and fluid this provides.
Step 5: To lock in all that goodness, I apply a moisturizer. I also like to do some lymphatic drainage (when I have time) with either a Gua Sha or an eye massage tool, which helps to remove toxins through the lymphatic system while also helping with product penetration. Read more about using a Gua Sha for lymphatic drainage here.
Step 6: Finally, I use a facial oil to nourish, soften and nourish my skin. I'm a big fan of Pure Skincare Rose O12 Moisture Defense Oil, $ 80, but check out these amazing facial oils to find one that's perfect for your skin type here.
Light therapy: Depending on what happens to my skin, I like to use light therapy to target different things. Blue and purple light is good for getting rid of outbreaks and preventing them when the light kills bacteria, while red light helps give my skin a great glow as it increases collagen and promotes healing.
Drum and brow oil: I have super saved fringes but if there is one thing that helps them get thicker than ever, it is Tropic Isle Living Red $ 11 Pimento Hair Growing Oil, which also has Jamaican black castor oil. I apply it to my eyelashes and to my lashes and the whip bed so that it nourishes the lashes to make them strong, but also comes to the skin where it can penetrate and increase the lash growth.
Check out a different variation on my night routine below – of course, double cleaning and my Clinique toner are there too!
