I met my current boyfriend while studying abroad in London a few years ago. We immediately turned things off and spent almost every day exploring the city. We even went on some European excursions to other countries as well. I met his parents and things went very well. Then the time came for me to return to the States.
We were joking about whether this was just a "study abroad throw", but when it came down to it, none of us really wanted to break things. Neither of us had ever made a long-distance relationship before either, so it would be a new territory for both of us. Especially since we would make long distances from different countries, I immediately started looking for apps that could keep us connected.
Learn more about long distances
The apps that helped me the most, from the beginning, were the articles and chat for long distance dating. Getting tips and suggestions in advance gave us a good idea of how we could make things work. Reading about typical problems with long distance relationships really helped us to know what to avoid. The problem that seemed to come up most often was communication, so I knew we would need some good apps to stay connected. In addition to the tips, it was also nice to meet others who are going through the same thing. Long distance can be difficult, but it is good to know that you are not alone!
Creating an online place for your relationship
While I was looking for communication apps that would help get a long distance job, I came across the entire list, which is perfect for everyone else in this situation:
Helpful apps for long distance relationships
This list introduced me to the Mellan app, which has been our go-to app for keeping up with each other and our busy lives. It's the same as social media for long distance relationships. We can talk every day and keep all our pictures, notes and calendars in one place. We can also count down to the next time we meet, which will be this summer when he comes to visit here! Having space just for your relationship makes communication easy and gives you a nice place to meet every day, especially those days when you are too busy to chat but want to let the other person know that you are thinking about them.
Long distance planning
Another thing that was important in keeping the relationship alive was being able to have a romantic time at a distance. Forums and articles are great for getting romantic ideas for a long distance relationship, like ordering your significant other a pizza or a surprise gift for delivery. In the long distance list I shared, I also found the app Rabbit, which lets you watch movies and TV shows together in a video chat. It really helps to make us feel like every other couple hugs on the couch every night to catch up with Netflix. Making your partner happy is always the goal, and although it's a little harder to do when you're not with them, you just need to get a little more creative.
If you are starting a long distance relationship or even if you have been for a long time now, I highly recommend that you try some of these apps or find your own. It will get long distances to feel a little less distant and keep you happy until the next time you will run and jump in your arms after they get off the plane.
