For new parents, a baby monitor is an important part of the children's bedroom hardware. There are many baby items to choose from, but you can say that monitors are something every parent wants or needs for his new little one. Like all baby products on the market, the better and the best to choose from. Below we discuss both audio and video screens to help you find the best fit for your family's needs.
How video screen monitors work
There are mainly three different types of baby monitors: analogue, digital and wifi based.
Analogue is the oldest form of a baby monitor. This type of monitor is as simple as the radios they used for World War II. One side is the receiver and the other side is the transmitter. The transmitter picks up audio with a microphone and sends it to the receiver via radio signals.
Digital is similar to analog because it has a receiver and a transmitter. The difference here is how the signal is transmitted. Each part of the system transmits multiple frequencies in a half random pattern, known only to the monitor's set. This transmission method, known as the Frequency Jump Spread Spectrum (FHSS), is the monitor's way of securing the signal and reducing the interference. It also allows video transfers.
Wifi-based is the newest form. The difference between the wifi-based version and the previous two versions is that wifi-based displays do not ship directly to a recipient. Instead, these screens transmit to a local Wi-Fi router. That's how the monitor works like something else on the network, which makes it possible to see your baby from anywhere in the house or in the world, with the right login.
How private is my signal?
The answer to this question depends on which one kind of baby monitor you use. Analogue audio-only screens are broadcast over an open channel. As a result, all recipients on the same channel can pick up the signal if they are close enough to each other. Since digital and monitors use FHSS, their signals are basically encrypted, as only the transmitter and receiver know the channel switching pattern.
When it comes to Wifi based, your privacy depends exclusively on the security of your router in your home. For example, if you configure your router and have never changed the default password, anyone who guesses your brand of the router can access your baby's video file. It's much harder for an attacker to brute force in your router if your password is four random words. This is an easy way to add the signature without making the password harder to remember.
The benefits of a Wifi Monitor
Wifi-based monitors almost always include a camera, which allows a video feeder. Often these cameras come with infrared, night vision or other low light options. They also enable remote viewing via a companion app, which means that with a baby monitor and iPhone, for example, you can watch your baby while away. In addition, many are equipped with Voice over Internet protocols (VOIP), so you can talk to your baby via the app.
Other benefits of a Wi-Fi based video monitor include sometimes:
- Heart Rate Monitors
- Motion monitors
- Preset Lullabies
- night Lights
- Pan / tilt / zoom (PTZ) camera functionality
- And more
Finally, wifi-enabled displays allow you to record and retain what is transmitted so that you can track sleep patterns or prove your little climbing out of his crib, or even just turn his delightful sleep into a digital memory card.
With all that Wi-Fi-based monitors can do, it's easy to see why they became so popular so fast. They give you the freedom to check in on any baby from anywhere via your iPhone or other smart device, and can alleviate many of your concerns. Just make sure you use a good password, and soon everyone in the house will sleep better at night.
