Julia Roberts says hairy armpits at 1999 "Notting Hill" Premiere was not a statement

Even though it has become much more common to see a star wearing a sleeveless and strapless look with unshaven armpits – Paris Jackson and Amandla Stenberg remember – it is still surprising for the home reporter to create buzz. But that buzz is nothing like the collective gasp that happened almost 20 years ago when Julia Roberts hit the red carpet with forearms that apparently had not been shaved for a long time.

In April 1999, a 31-year-old Roberts premier participated Notting Hill wearing a beautiful reddish pink sequined Vivienne Tam dress. As she made her way down the red carpet in a matching lipstick and retro updo, the beloved actor waved to fans, her loose cap sleeves revealing hairy armpits. I personally remember a widespread conversation about the moment that almost starts the opening of the film and a little lie Googling reveals that the tabloids made untreated statements about Roberts motif that stretches from making a feminist statement to wear her body hair like the boyfriend Benjamin Bratt preferred.

At that time, Roberts said pretty much nothing about what more judging observers considered a beauty faux pas, just adding the impression that she did not give a fuzz. But on her new E! Prat show, Busy tonightBusy Philipps asked Roberts about the now iconic Hollywood memory.

"You rocked the hairy armpit at Notting Hill premiere, and you never really said it was like a statement. And when I was a younger woman, I took it as a statement. I thought it was really punk rock and cool, "Philipps said to Roberts, transition from talks about his new Amazon series Home-coming. "And I was just wondering if you felt it was a punkrock statement or if you were literally like" I can not. I can not shave my armpits this night. ""

"The picture is alive in my mind actually from that moment," said Roberts, rocking her new soft pink highlights, using her arms to animate describe that evening's thought process to a laughing audience. "I think I had not really calculated my length on the sleeve and the fan and how the two things would go together and reveal personal things about me. So that was not so much a statement as it's just a part of the statement I make like a human on the planet for myself. "

The audience applauded the unnecessary but delightful explanation, and Philipps replied, "It's just very dope, and I'm here for it." Approved.
