The Thrones Game Hype is REAL! If you are a fan of the show, no doubt you have counted down the days to find out what really happens between Jon Snow and Daenery's – will they fall in love and share the throne? (Okay, that's a stupid hypothesis)! Anyway, Urban Decay collaborated with HBO to create the ultimate, limited edition of Thrones-inspired makeup games, and we're here for that.
If you are wondering what we mean by inspiration, we talk eyeshadows, lipsticks, eyeshadow brushes and eyeliner's named characters, places and all things GOT! And guess what? The products are launched today (April 14thth) same day episode one of last season airs – who else is excited by?!
We tried out all the products to see if these were just hyped about the collector's items or really good products. Here's what we thought:
What you get: 20 shades of matte, metallic and shimmering eye shadows in probably the most unique theme we've ever seen. The outer drawer is decorated in sword, and when you open it there is a large mirror among a map-themed interior with a classic Daenerys quote. There is even a pop-up belief – quite redundant, pretty cool. The eye shadows lie on a tray that you can completely remove from the box.
What we thought: We are quite impressed by the eye shadows. The palette is divided into four shadow collections representing different places and the shadow spectrum is very large: you have everything from green and blue metallic and rich bronze in metallic and food formulas to duochrome purple, gold and pink.
Formulas: The metallics have a fantastic payout and work well with the brushes in the collection and also with the fingers. Mattesna is super-creamy and pigmented and continues very smoothly, even though we felt they faded slightly during the day. We also noticed that even though there was only a slight deposition when applied to the lid, we found pieces of metallic eye shadow that landed on our cheeks throughout the day. Not ideal if you have gone for their boldest shade! We recommend using a lid primer, such as Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion, $ 24, and setting with a setting spray.
What we liked: We love that you can use the four categories to create a look that you know will work (which makes life easier if you are new to makeup), and that all these colors work very well together as well. We created a dramatic wing-shaped look with Frozen and Sight on the top cover and Weirwood Leaves and bend the knee on the outer lower line, with a pop of Hardhome in the inner corner to light up the eye – something we even imagine Cercei would be impressed with!
The verdict: Despite the fallout, we really enjoyed using and wearing these eye shadows. You can create lots of different looks, from bold and sexy to neutral or beautiful, and the formulas are very easy to work with.
What it is: A collection of four eyeliners in Urban Decay's award-winning formula.
Dragon Smoke: A midnight blue with purple and blue shimmers
Lannister Gold: A super metallic, cool toned gold shade
Winterfell Snow: The most unique distant; a pale iridescent sheer formula consisting of blue and purple shimmers
Knight King: A beautiful, rich green-blue hue.
What we liked: This is such a creamy formula and glides firmly on the lid without any problems. The shades are all amazing, and the metallic gold screen is definitely a new favor for us. When applied, it is a small play time so you can soil and mix out the form if you want, but once it is set, it will be in place all day without you spending!
The verdict: Whether you love GOT or not, it's worth checking out!
What it is: If you bend your knee to Daenery's every day of the week, then you are naturally fascinated by this high-light palette with three new shades of Urban Decay's Afterglow highlighter. Each shade is characterized by a small dragon egg and named after Daenery's three children / dragons.
What we thought: Originally, we weren't sure of the colors, but they actually look really nice and work for both fair and deep skin tones (fair skin tones can use the deepest shade as a bronzer), but we love being different so any GOT fan can carry them. The powder is finely ground and offers a daily twilight – you will not blind people (in a good way).
Judgment: It's beautiful, but it's not our favorite product from the collection. The price seems to be a bit high for the packaging.
What it is: A collection of four lipsticks in a super-creamy, intensely pigmented formula. If you have always wanted to embody your main lady, then now is your chance.
White Walker: Deep berry wine
Daenerys Targaryen: A cool toned metal red
Cersei Lannister: Metallic gold
Sansa Stark: A hot peach
What we thought: The formula goes smoothly and is super comfortable on the lips. It has a soft shine and does not dry properly, and they are definitely not transfer-free.
We weren't blown away by shades, but they fit the characters they portray (not that we've ever noticed a white walker in lipstick). The pigmentation was pleasant and lasted very well (at least a few hours), although the shadow Sansa Stark was very sheer and did not really come through deeper complexes.
tip: We struggled to get sharp contours, so we recommend that you use this with a lip cover.
The verdict: The formula is fine, but we were not obsessed with nuances! The packaging is very sweet and we like that each is unique to the character, so if you like these shades it is definitely worth checking out in the store.
The Eyeshadow Brushes, $ 28 (each)
We've always been a fan of the Urban Decay eyeshadows, and they all went out and extra for this limited edition collection of two brushes that mimic Arya and Jon Snow's sword – not that we've ever seen any of them with eyeshadow!
Jon Snow's Longclaw Large Eyeshadow Brush: This is perfect for applying matte over the lid or blending shade.
Arya Strong Needle Flat Eyeshadow Brush: This little brush is perfect for packing metallic shadows on the lid, or dabbing shimmers in the inner corner. You can use the tip of the brush to apply eye shadow to the bottom line.
The verdict: Both brushes work perfectly, and even though Jon Snow's little harder sword / brush is used to using them, these are definitely the cutest collectibles.
What it is: A universally flattering red shade to give lips and cheeks a red flush.
What we thought: We will be straight up, we were not big fans of this. It took a lot of building to get pigment payout and it used to not generally appreciate us. But if you like a natural look, we say to try in the store.
Final judgment on the game of thrones x Urban Decay Collection: We are actually quite impressed. The faves for us were the eyeshadow palette, eyeshadow brushes and eyeliners, which we will definitely use again. Attention to detail is just as good as the game of thrones!
