Add this to your skin care list: Tremella fuciformis, also known as snow mushroom. It sounds like something Queen Elsa would order on her pizza, and yes it's a mushroom, but it looks like a white gelatinous flower than a sponge. It is usually used in traditional sweet Chinese foods (like snow mushroom soup) and has also been a staple ingredient in Asian medicine and skin care for thousands of years. Now it appears as an active ingredient in skin care products in this part of the world, including Volitions Snow Mushroom Water Serum and Moon Juice Beauty Shroom Plumping Jelly Serum.
As far back as the Imperial Tang Dynasty, concubine Yang Guifei (713 to 756) – one of China's famous four great beauties – has credited the snowmobile with keeping his youthful appearance. Modern science can explain why: Cosmetic chemist Ginger King says silver ear jump, another name for tremella fuciformis, is a popular dessert delicacy in Asia because of their ability to increase skin hydration when taken internally. "Because of the gelatinous structure and the high amount of polysaccharide it has been used in skin care to provide hydration as well," she says attract.
Dermatologist Dendy Engelman, director of dermatological surgery at Metropolitan Hospital in New York City, says that the fungus seems similar to hydralization hyaluronic acid by dragging moisture to the skin. Hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water, so finding a completely natural match for its hydration is quite large. And snow mushrooms have an extra edge. "The particles are less than hyaluronic acid so it penetrates into the skin," Engelman says. However, she warns that she wants to see more targeted studies on the ingredient's skin care products before she gets it like a magic sponge.
This fungus looks promising, and the skin care industry is gaining momentum. In addition to Volitions Snow Mushroom Water Serum and Moon Juice Beauty Shroom Plumping Jelly Serum – both designed to enhance skin elasticity through intensive hydration while working to reduce signs of inflammation – you can also find snow mushrooms in Tata Harper Clarifying Moisturizer, Joanna Vargas Euphoria Face Mask and Cypriot Glow Philtra.
