If there is one thing everyone knows about Lady Gaga – other than her epic music – it's that when it comes to beauty, Lady Gaga has no boundaries. So it's no surprise when she decided to launch her makeup collection, Haus Laboratories, with her catchy slogan, "Our house, your rules." The theme of the brand is about letting your creativity flow and making you feel beautiful to you. As Gaga says "Your glam, your expression, your artistry."
The collection consists of four key products: a liquid eyeliner, liquid eye shadow, lip liner and lip gloss, plus some eyeliner stickers. At first glance, this does not seem to be the wavy collection you would expect from the woman who entered the music scene with a (now iconic) lightning bolt on her face, or Gaga who wore a meat dress to MTV Music Awards 2010. But as unexpectedly intimidating as these products is (never a bad thing!) they really give you the creative freedom to decide what your look is; be subtle, be bold, be you – it's your choice! We tried them all, here's what we thought …
What it is: A weightless, dirt-resistant liquid eyeshadow in six shades.
What we thought: We really like this eyeshadow! The formula is VERY light, which means it blends in easily so you can create a really simple look and you can easily use your fingers or a brush to spread the formula. When the shade sets, you can apply another layer to build up the pigments to get a high look.
We also used the applicator to apply it as a dramatic skimmer liner, which worked really well and made a good pronunciation, even though it took us about 10 seconds to create!
Tip: The shimmers dry really fast and we recommend that you layer them to build up the intensity rather than applying a thick layer, which will take a while to set. If you have a hood lid and use the formula as a lining, keep your lids lowered while the formula sets.
shadows: Shade Aphrodite is a super pretty champagne pink shade that looks amazing mixed over the lid and stays in place all day. Rose B * tch looks fantastic on rich skin tones and we live for the green Dynasty shade, which makes a beautiful smoky eye when paired with the shimmering black shade, Chained Ballerina.
What it is: A waterproof and dirt-resistant semi-matte pencil case in six shades.
What we thought: We love how creamy and supple the pen formula is. It glides easily on the lips and is really nicely pigmented while also blending out. The formula is not super matte and has a slight sheen, and although the formula is supposed to be water resistant, it does take some time to set and does not lock completely in place.
Although there are only six shades, we love the range of colors and it is possible to find a shade that makes a good nude for every skin tone. We would love to see some more bold colors in this formula as the collection grows.
What it is: A yellow lip gloss in pearl and pure pigment finish (six shades).
What we thought: The first thing we noticed with this shine is the really unique applicator – the kind of hooks on your lips and hugging them, which felt weird but worked really well. The colored glosses are really pigmented while the beaded formula (Entranced and Attitude) is quite glittery, so if you prefer a more subtle lip we recommend the colored glosses (Corset, Rose, Scream and Venus). The texture is rich and feels moisturizing without being too sticky, and we found the formula very comfortable to wear. For a high gloss finish, layer it!
Tip: Add a layer of Enchanted (a pure shimmer of pink beads) to the center of your lips to add volume.
What it is: A weightless, long-wearing eyeliner with a flexible felt tip.
What we thought: This is a really nice felt-tipped lining that allows you to get a super accurate, really sharp wing. The pigmented formula glides easily and is super easy to use – we love the weight and feel of the product, which is much heavier than a regular feed. The formula is not dirt resistant or waterproof, but it lasts well throughout the day. We feel that this would be a good feed for beginners.
What it is: An eyeliner and wing sticker set. The stickers have five pairs with two different wing sizes.
What we thought: We love the idea of these stickers and they are literally the easiest way to get the perfect wing! At the first application, these looked absolutely fantastic and blended beautifully with Liquid Eye-Lie-Ner which comes in the kit. But when we wore these, they felt a little uncomfortable and began to peel off at the edges, and after 20 minutes a whole came off.
Tip: The stickers look good and are so easy to use, but we recommend that you apply them to bare skin so that they stick better, as they did not last well when applied to the skin with foundation and powder formulas. Another option would be to add a layer of lash glue to each sticker to help them stick better to your skin.
We have to say, we were expecting a slightly more daring collection from Lady Gaga, but we love that this collection is something that everyone can use and play with. The formulas are really nice and work well for beginners while make-up junkies will have fun creating bold and dramatic looks with this collection as well. We are definitely excited to see shadow extensions and what's coming from Haus Laboratories.
The final note, the collection is sold on Amazon and hauslabs.com, and we definitely recommend that you buy from the latter site, as there are often fake products listed on Amazon, so just be careful when ordering your products.
